Exploring new pathways for biomass recovery and valorisation

One of our project partners, IrBEA, hosted their 25th National Bioenergy Conference this week titled "Resource to Resilience: Biomass fuelling Ireland’s energy future"

At the event, members of the IrBEA executive team Stephen McCormack, R&D Project Manager and Kimberley Harris, Project Executive engaged with attendees at their exhibition stand highlighting importance the Interreg NWE VALORANT Project.

Stephen presented an overview of IrBEA’s project work during one of the afternoon sessions, where he focused on the projects aim to transform horticultural residues into high-value resources by developing practical, locally tailored solutions to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. Through the implementation of cascading use of biomass principle, which underpins the bioeconomy, the project seeks to explore various methods of resource recovery including polyphenol extraction, protein production and bioenergy and biochar production.

The VALORANT project sits alongside a growing number of R&D projects that IrBEA is involved in including the Interreg NWE CASCADE and C5 projects, the PPS Biochar project and the EU Just Transition Fund BIOCHAR project, all of which were discussed on the day.

VALORANT project officially launched in Geel, Belgium
The VALORANT project has officially started with a two-day kick-off meeting held on 2–3 March in Geel, Belgium. Hosted by the Expertisecentrum Duurzame Biomassa en Chemie, the event brought together project partners from across North-West Europe to mark the beginning of this new European collaboration.
