Objectives

Driving circular economy solutions
for horticultural waste in Northwest Europe

The VALORANT project aims to address the underutilisation of horticultural residues across Northwest Europe by developing concrete, scalable solutions for their valorisation. Large volumes of residues from fruits, vegetables and flowers — often generated by production surpluses, harvest losses or extreme weather — remain insufficiently exploited, despite their high potential.

The main objective of VALORANT is to optimise the recovery and valorisation of these residues by transforming them into high-value products such as bioactive compounds, proteins, bioenergy and bio-based materials.

Key objectives

1.

Developing a joint decision-making framework that integrates place-based characteristics (availability of residues, regional markets), physico-chemical properties of residues, recovery technologies and valorisation pathways. This framework will support stakeholders in identifying the most relevant and sustainable solutions.

2.

Validating sustainable and cost-effective valorisation pathways through transnational pilot actions. These pilots will assess technical feasibility, economic viability and environmental performance.

3.

Facilitating the adoption and upscaling of solutions by providing a digital application, a dedicated training scheme and matchmaking activities across Northwest Europe.

By combining these objectives, VALORANT contributes to reducing agricultural waste, improving resource efficiency and accelerating the transition towards a circular and bio-based economy.
