Project partner ILVO participated in the YAS 2026 - Young Algaeneers Symposium (YAS), which took place at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and was hosted by Maria Barbosa. The event was represented by the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA), including participation from Carlos Unamunzaga.
For the VALORANT project, this symposium was a valuable opportunity to exchange knowledge and discuss innovations related to algae-based biotechnologies and circular bioeconomy solutions.
Our contribution focused on the cultivation of microalgae on agri-food waste streams. We shared insights on:
- Preprocessing strategies for these side streams,
- Nutrient variability between different waste streams,
- And the growth performance of different microalgae species.

In addition to the scientific sessions, the symposium included inspiring workshops and site visits, such as:
- A visit to ALGAPARK,
- Workshops on the use of seaweed-based materials in hotel room products and materials,
- And even cocktail-making sessions using Spirulina blue
- Many more...
Through events such as YAS 2026, VALORANT partners continue to build connections, share expertise and advance innovative bioeconomy solutions for a more resource-efficient future.
